My First Book

In which Princess Lilyput, having read THE BIG O in one sitting, and deciding it was sadly lacking in substance and utterly derivative in style, moves on to something a little more demanding: high-contrast pictures of cows, sheep and ducks. Still, just so long as she’s reading, eh?

  1. High-contrast pictures of animals? Sounds like genre fiction to me.

  2. Glad you didn't start Lily on Eightball Boogie. Too much swearing and violence in that one for the first month or two.

  3. It seems that our sons had a German translation of that particular book (i.e. no sheep but a fast car).

  4. Lily looks a little worried that this is the reading lark you're warbling to her about. Not greatly impressed, imho. You'll have to write her a book or five. :)

  5. But does she have Goodnight Moon? My mom, librarian extraordinarinaire, says that's the book all munchkins need to start out life.

Lily is a beauty. Glad to see she's doing well.

  8. I’d hold off on David Goodis and Jim Thompson at least until she’s cut her first teeth.

  9. I'm with Fiona. I think you need to write some books of your own. After all, the best funny crime writing for young readers comes from Ireland, these days. I'll even review it for you.

Lily does have a sense of humour, I trust? (She'll need it...)

Declan Burke has published a number of novels, the most recent of which is ABSOLUTE ZERO COOL. As a journalist and critic, he writes and broadcasts on books and film for a variety of media outlets, including the Irish Times, RTE, the Irish Examiner and the Sunday Independent. He has an unfortunate habit of speaking about himself in the third person. All views expressed here are his own and are very likely to be contrary.
